Good in a World of Bests

Posted on:

Dear friends,

I wonder if this quote (from the NYT last weekend) hits you the way it did me:

“In a world of bests, good is a relief. Best invites an argument; good is just a suggestion: Here’s the thing, I think you’ll probably like it. Good is generous: This is one good thing; others welcome. You want to spend your time with good. Good says, Look, I am not making any claims to being the one and only. I’m not promising forever. Let’s hang out and see where this goes.”

My heart leapt when I read these words, and my brain said, “Oh, yes!”

And then, farther down in the same newsletter, I read about a play on Broadway that I really want to see called “Every Brilliant Thing,” that—I think—takes this idea and creates an interactive stage play proving it. No other Broadway play has called to me quite so loudly (well, maybe “Hamilton”).

I’ve said it before, that “More Than Good Coffee” started as a statement we put on our first truck to fill a couple of empty spaces at the suggestion of our wise designer. We weren’t sure we should say that. But it turns out there’s truth to it. Sure, Refuge Coffee is more than good. But we are not claiming to be the best. Everything you’d say about a new good thing when you tell a friend about it is what we are.

More than a good job.

More than good messaging.

More than good coffee.

Not an argument for the best job. (We are working on that one, but we still have a long way to go!)

Not pressure to listen to what we have to say. (Although we’re grateful when you do!)

Not the best coffee. (Have you been to Opo or to afternoon coffee in an Ethiopian home? Just to mention two places that can be better.)

This is all I have to say today: Let’s invite people to what’s good. And let’s RSVP to as many of those as we can!

GOODbye for now,

Kitti
